Gladiators: A Day at The Roman Games

    Monday 4th November 2024, 7.45pm

This talk will present highlights of Colchester Museums’ exhibition Gladiators: A Day at the Roman GamesIt will focus on new research of the Colchester Vase, a cremation urn excavated over 170 years but which recently has received new ceramic, epigraphic and osteological analysis. This new analysis suggests that the Vase records combat between real gladiators at Colchester, making it the first explicit evidence for an arena spectacle in Roman Britain.

Glynn Davis is the Senior Curator at Colchester Museums and was lead curator for the exhibitionHe is a specialist in Roman archaeology and material culture and has published on the subject of Roman magic. He has previously worked at the London Museum‘s Archaeological Archive, where he created and delivered award-winning projects that engaged the public with the country’s largest archaeological collection
