“A Highwayman came riding” is a reference to the poem “The Highwayman” by Alfred Noyes which took a romantic view of highwaymen. In their time highwaymen were known as the knights of the road. Some of them were gallant when it suited them, but could be violent too. This talk explores the reality behind the myths through the exploits of highwaymen in Hertfordshire. We will meet characters, such as “The Great Highwayman” and “The Flying Highwayman,” who were Hertfordshire born and bred.
